Update: State Directive Regarding Compliance with Pavement Markings Electrical Box Murals NOT Included as Part of Mandate
Corpus Christi, Texas – On Friday, October 24, 2025, the Downtown Management District (DMD) was made aware that under TxDOT’s recent guidance, non-standard pavement markings on public roads, such as murals and decorative crosswalks, were no longer permitted as part of the SAFE ROADS Initiative, which prioritizes consistency and safety in roadway design. Local jurisdictions were given 30 days to comply in order to remain eligible for state and federal transportation funding.
Today, a meeting between our Texas Legislative Delegation and TxDOT was held to consider the future of our beloved Electrical Box Murals in Downtown Corpus Christi. As confirmed by Chairman Todd Hunter and Representative Denise Villalobos, the Downtown Corpus Christi electrical box murals are NOT included in this mandate and do NOT need to be removed.
“A heartfelt thank you to our community and legislative delegation for standing with us and supporting the preservation of public art in Downtown Corpus Christi” said Arlene Medrano, Executive Director of the Downtown Management District. “Your advocacy helps keep our community vibrant and inspired. Let’s continue celebrating the artists, partners, and leaders who make this possible.”
