Agnes/South Chaparral Reconfiguration
The Agnes/South Chaparral Reconfiguration Project is the reconfiguration of the last one-way section of Chaparral Street between Coopers Alley and Kinney Street and aims to extend the pre-existing look and feel of main street, increase pedestrian comfort and safety, present future development and investment opportunities, and attract vibrant street life.
Identifying the Disconnect
in 2014, Downtown Corpus Christi's main street, Chaparral Street, underwent a major reconfiguration from one-way into a two-way street. Upon completion in 2018, the project was successful in creating connectivity and accessibility to and through downtown. However, we quickly identified a section of South Chaparral Street between Coopers Alley and Kinney Street that remained one-way and disconnected Downtown from South Downtown, effectively isolating a cluster of small businesses. This section also posed hazardous conditions, providing no buffer between pedestrian flow and traffic heading northbound from Agnes Street.
Preliminary Findings & Current Challenges
Timeline
August 2024
We hosted a stakeholder engagement meeting in partnership with Design Workshop to get a better understanding of community feedback, concerns, and expectations as the project moves forward.
Key takeaways include:
- Wide crosswalk distances
- Narrow sidewalks
- Inadequate roadway buffers
- Overcrowded sidewalk utilities
- Insufficient lighting
- Lacking vehicular traffic flow and speed control
- Poor pedestrian flow
September 2024
Design Workshop submitted their final Design Concept proposal for our official review.
March 2025
Secondary stakeholder engagement meeting scheduled to review and select potential design concept options.
April 2025
Design concept options and stakeholder selection taken to DMD Board for review and possible action.
May 2025
Design concept selection taken to TIRZ #3 Board for review and possible action.
