Details
Leandra Urrutia presents an exhibition of sculptures made across different periods of her practice, placing past and present works in dialogue with one another. Using female intuition, Urrutia has been fabricating narrative imagery for over a decade, seeking to connect that which will bring new meaning to tired ways of thinking.
Urrutia approaches the unknown and challenges the status quo through fiction and invention, borrowing from Western, Eastern, and sports traditions to devise narratives that reimagine how she thinks and lives. Through hybrid forms, material talismans, and carefully staged encounters, she weaves her perspective into personal object and myth, giving form to what haunts her and releasing it into the world.
Leandra Urrutia is an object maker and educator based in Corpus Christi, Texas. Borrowing parts of the human form, she makes powerful compositions and installations that showcase her unconventional creative sensibility.
Her honors and awards include national and international residencies sponsored by Windgate in Kennesaw, Georgia, and the McKnight Foundation in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her work has been recognized nationally by NCECA, including the 2007 Emerging Artist Award, and published in 500 Figures in Clay and 500 Ceramic Sculptures, part of the Lark Series.
Urrutia is a co-founding member of TETRA Collective: Women in Clay in the Texas A&M University System and Studio Nong, An International Sculpture Collective and Residency Program that originated in Nanning, Guangxi Province, China.
In addition to making ceramic and mixed-media sculpture, she creates functional pottery, raku pots, pit-fire wares, and clay jewelry. She has served on the faculty of Memphis College of Art in Memphis, Tennessee, and Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena, Mississippi. She presently leads the Ceramic Program at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi.
