The sculpture is of the Aztec Legend of the star-crossed lovers, Popocatepetl and Ixtaccihuatl. In one version, upon hearing the false news of Popocatepetl's death, Ixtaccihuatl falls ill, succumbs to her deep sorrow, and dies of a broken heart. When Popocatepetl returns triumphant from war to encounter his beloved's death, his heartbreak is inconsolable. The sculpture is of Propocatepetl kneeling and cradling a lifeless Ixtaccihuatl. She is draped in a white cloth with a spray of roses. He is bare-chested and wears a loincloth and headband. Behind Popocatepetl is an eagle, a snake and agave plant. Southwest Pieta was designated as a National Treasure by President Clinton in 1999.
