The Friendship Monument - Captain Blas de la Garza Falcón.
In 1762, Captain Blas Maria de la Garcia Flacon was commissioned by Don Jose de Escandon (the Governor of Nuevo Santander) to establish an outpost and way station named Petronila, five leagues from the Nueces River in the present Nueces County. The Spanish Territory extended from the San Antonio River to the Punuco River near Vera Cruz, Mexico. Captain Falcon established a garrison, explored the coast, Padre Island, Mustang Island, St. Joseph's Island and established a mission to Christianize the Karankawa Indians. Falcon later brought the first longhorn cattle to South Texas when he established a ranch in the area. In 1764 Falcon received the first land grant issued by the Spanish Governor.
