Downtown Businesses Get Festive and Decorate their Storefronts in Preparation for Mayor’s Sparkling Christmas Lights Contest

Corpus Christi, Texas – The Corpus Christi Downtown Management District (CCDMD) is hosting their annual Mayor’s Sparkling Christmas Lights Contest powered by The American Electric Power (AEP) Foundation on Friday, December 6, 2024, during the December First Friday ArtWalk. With nearly 25 businesses participating, a panel of VIP guest judges will stroll through the downtown streets and cast their votes starting at 6:00PM.

Downtown businesses and property owners can sign up for five categories for a chance to win cash prizes: Best Use of Lights, Best Window Display, Best Window Paint, Best Exterior Elements, and Holiday Champion (Best Overall). Winners will be announced during the first City Council meeting of the year.

“One of the goals of the AEP Foundation is to enrich the overall vitality of the communities and cities we serve. One of the ways we do this is by powering fun, safe, inclusive events like the Mayor's Sparkling Christmas Lights Contest,” said Efrain Franco, AEP Texas External Affairs manager. “The AEP Foundation is proud to power this event that will keep beautiful Downtown Corpus Christi lit up and festive throughout the holiday season."

“Thanks to the generous contributions of the AEP Foundation, the DMD has been given the opportunity to bring Mayor’s Sparkling Christmas Lights Contest back to Downtown,” says Daniela Campos, Communications & Public Relations Coordinator of the CCDMD. “Through this event, we are able to recreate nostalgic memories of the past, but we’re able to support small local businesses throughout downtown.”

The public is encouraged to come out and see the decorations as well as enjoy December First Friday ArtWalk. While there are no road closures, there will be pop up vendors and food trucks in downtown parks as well as pop up vendors inside participating businesses.

More information about CCDMD’s Holiday Series events to be announced in the upcoming weeks. All outdoor events are weather permitting.
